Surfen is a symmetrical quinolyl-urea analog that binds GAGs (glycosaminoglycans) via electrostatic interaction with the negatively charged sulfate and carboxyl moieties present in heparan sulfate (HS), heparin, and dermatan sulfate, resulting in effective blockage of GAGs interactions with their protein binding partners.
